  • Leather and cellophane.

TECHNICAL DATA SHEET FOR MONO ETHYLENE GLYCOL (MEG)

Diethylene glycol (DEG) is an organic compound with the formula (HOCH2CH2)2O. It is a colorless, practically odorless, poisonous, hygroscopic liquid with a sweetish taste. It is miscible in water, alcohol, ether, acetone, and ethylene glycol. DEG is a widely used solvent.

Diethylene glycol, CH2OHCH2OCH2CH2OH, is similar in properties to MEG (mono ethylene glycol), but DEG has a higher boiling point, viscosity, and specific gravity. MEG is the raw material used in the production of polyester fiber, PET resins, alkyds, and unsaturated polyesters. Diethylene glycol is used in the manufacture of unsaturated polyester resins, polyurethanes and plasticizers. It is a water-soluble liquid; boiling point 245 C, and is soluble in many organic solvents.

DEG is produced by the partial hydrolysis of ethylene oxide. Depending on the conditions, varying amounts of DEG and related glycols are produced. The resulting product is two ethylene glycol molecules joined by an ether bond,

Diethylene glycol is derived as a co-product with ethylene glycol and triethylene glycol.

Methoxy propanol (also known as propylene glycol monomethyl ether, 1-methoxy-2-propanol, PM, and PGME), is a colourless liquid that is soluble in water and is highly flammable. It is a methoxy alcohol derivative and has a formula of C4H10O2. Methoxy propanol is produced by the reaction of 1,2-epoxy propane and methanol in the presence of a catalyst, and this is then followed by distillation.
APPLICATIONS
  • Methoxy propanol is predominately used in the manufacture of propylene glycol methyl ether acetate (otherwise known as PMA) and is also used in industrial and commercial products including paints, varnishes, inks, synthetic resin and rubber adhesives, and automotive and oven cleaners.
  • It is also used as a cleaning agent in the LCD and electronics industry.
Methoxy propyl acetate (also known as PMA, 1-methoxy-2-acetoxypropane, or propylene glycol monomethyl ether-1,2-acetate) is a clear liquid that has limited miscibility with water. It is a medium volatility solvent with a mild odour and has the formula C6H12O3. Methoxy propyl acetate is produced when ethylene, or propylene, oxide is reacted with alcohol. This forms glycol monoethers which are then esterified with acetic acid to produce PMA.
APPLICATIONS
  •  The first is as a solvent as PMA has good solvent power for many resins and dyes.
  • It is used in dyes for furniture polish or wood stains, and in dye solutions and pastes for printing.
  • It is also used in processes that colour leather and textiles, and in ball-point pen pastes.
  • PMA can also be used as a coalescent in coatings, and is particularly suitable for coatings containing polyisocyanates.
  • It can also be used as a binder for core sands in foundries and is also utilised as a cleaning agent in the electronics industry.

Di propylene glycol (also known as oyybispropanol, 2,2-dihydroxyisopropylether, 1,1-oxydipropane-2-ol, di-1,2-propylene glycol, and DPG) is a clear, colourless, viscous liquid with a characteristic odour and the formula C6H14O3. It is fully miscible in water and is also miscible with many organic solvents. This solvency, combined with low toxicity and a low evaporation rate, makes DPG a chemical which is a very useful reactive intermediate in a range of industries.

Polyalkylene glycols are used in many lubricant applications including gear oils, fire resistant hydraulic fluids, compressor oils, quenchants, metalworking fluids, aluminum processing fluids, chain and textile lubricants. Their high thermal and oxidative stability, excellent lubricity, high film strength / load capacity, anti-wear properties, micropitting resistance, and shear stability make them an ideal choice as base stock for formulating high-performance industrial lubricants.
